INTRODUCTION
Bitstream has provided 10 professional-quality typefaces for the Macintosh in both PostScript® Type 1 and TrueType™ formats. These typefaces are included with this release of Quark XPress as examples of typefaces from Bitstream’s Library. The Library contains almost 1,100 other typefaces available directly from Bitstream and its authorized resellers. In addition, the entire Library is available on CD-ROM. Bitstream TypeShop includes the entire Library for the Macintosh in PostScript Type 1 format. • Installing the Bitstream Analogue in System 7.x
>>Installing Bitstream Fonts in System 7.x<<
In System 7.x, you can install Bitstream fonts by dragging them onto the System Folder icon. You do not have to use Font/DA Mover. See the Quick Installation Instructions to find out how to install Bitstream fonts in System 7.x.
You can also use Suitcase II™ to install Bitstream fonts in System 7.x. Use version 2.0 or later of Suitcase II. Follow the instructions in chapter 2 of the PostScript Type 1 User Guide.
>>Application-Specific Notes for System 7.x<<
Bitstream Type 1 fonts are 100% compatible with System 7.x. If a problem with fonts occurs in an application running System 7.x that didn’t occur running System 6.x, contact the application manufacturer.
Here are a few notes about commonly used font utilities.
>LaserWriter® Font Utility
Use the version of LaserWriter Font Utility that came with your System 7.x software to download printer outline fonts. Or use the LaserWriter Font Utility in the Utility for System 7.x folder on the Bitstream TypeShop CD. To use the LaserWriter Font Utility, follow the procedures described in chapter 2 of the PostScript Type 1 User Guide.
>Adobe Type Manager®
If you install Bitstream fonts with Suitcase II, follow the instructions for using ATM® in chapter 2 of the PostScript Type 1 User Guide. Make sure you use Suitcase II, version 2.0 or later, and ATM, version 2.0 or later.
See “Using Bitstream Type 1 Fonts with Adobe Type Manager” later in this file for more information.
Call Adobe for information about any updates to ATM.

INSTALLING THE BITSTREAM ANALOGUE IN VERSION 6.X
The Bitstream Analogue is a desk accessory that helps you find and manage the font names associated with Bitstream typefaces, including the names other font vendors use. Since TypeShop includes version 2.0 Bitstream fonts, the Analogue also provides version 1.0 font names, useful if you are upgrading.
Install the Analogue the same way you install other desk accessories. Follow the instructions below to install Analogue with Font/DA Mover and Suitcase II. See the section that applies to you. (If you have System 7.x and don't want to install the Analogue with Suitcase II, see the previous section, “For System 7.x Users.”)
1. Put the Bitstream Type diskette in your disk drive if you haven’t done
so already.
2. Install Font/DA Mover 3.8 or 4.1 if you haven’t done so already.
3. Double-click the Font/DA Mover on your hard disk.
4. Select Desk Accessory at the top of the dialog box.
5. Click Open under the box on the right.
6. Click Drive until you see the name of the Bitstream diskette listed at the top.
7. Select the Utilities folder and click Open.
8. Select Bitstream Analogue and click Open.
9. Select Bitstream Analogue in the box on the right and click Copy.
10. Click Close on the right side.
11. Click Quit.
You can now select the Bitstream Analogue from the Apple menu. (If MultiFinder® is running, you may need to restart the Macintosh so that Bitstream Analogue appears in the Apple menu.) For help on using the Analogue, select Bitstream Analogue Help from the Bitstream Analogue menu.
(To remove the Analogue, open the Font/DA Mover. Select Desk Accessory at the top of the dialog box. Select Bitstream Analogue from the box on the left. Click Remove, then click Quit.)
>>Installing the Analogue with Suitcase II (for both System 6.0x and System
7.x Users)<<
1. Install Suitcase II if you haven’t done so already.
Follow the instructions in the Suitcase II user guide. Suitcase II should be in the
System Folder on the hard disk.
2. Put the Bitstream Type diskette in your disk drive.
3. Double-click the diskette icon.
4. Double-click the Utilities folder.
5. Drag the Bitstream Analogue icon to the folder containing desk accessories on
the hard disk.
6. Select Suitcase II from the Apple menu.
7. Click Suitcases.
8. Click Open File(s).
If you don’t see Bitstream Analogue listed, select the desk accessory folder at
the top of the box.
9. Select Bitstream Analogue and click Open.
10. Click Cancel.
11. Click Quit.
You can now select the Bitstream Analogue from the Apple menu. For help on using the Analogue, select Bitstream Analogue Help from the Bitstream Analogue menu.
(To close and remove the Analogue, select Suitcase II from the Apple menu. Click Suitcases. Select Bitstream Analogue and click Close. Click Quit. The Bitstream Analogue is now closed in Suitcase II. If you want to remove it from the hard disk, open the desk accessory folder, and drag the Bitstream Analogue icon to Trash.)
“FALSE” BOLD, ITALIC, AND BOLD ITALIC SCREEN FONTS
One way to select a Bitstream font is to select it directly from the application’s font menu. For example, to select Baskerville Bold, select Baskerville Bd BT in the font menu. (The "BT" at the end of a font name stands for Bitstream.)
Another way is to first select the “plain” font from the font menu, and then select the style from the style menu or use the style key command. For example, to select Baskerville Bold, select Baskerville BT from the font menu. Then select Bold from the style menu or press Command-Shift-B. (This method works only if you choose a style that is part of the same group or suitcase as the plain font. For example, Baskerville Roman, Baskerville Bold, Baskerville Italic, and Baskerville Bold Italic are part of the Baskerville Rm/Bd BT suitcase.)
If you first select a bold, italic, or bold italic font from the font menu, and then select one of the styles in the style menu, you will often get a Macintosh-generated or “false” screen font. For example, if you first select Baskerville Bd BT and then select Bold from the style menu, the Macintosh emboldens the Baskerville Bold font, so that the screen font appears heavy and jagged. However, when you print the font to a PostScript® printer, it prints correctly as Baskerville Bold.
The list below shows the actual Bitstream screen fonts and the “false” screen fonts that the Macintosh generates when you first select Baskerville, Baskerville Italic, Baskerville Bold, or Baskerville Bold Italic from the font menu, and then select a style.
Baskerville BT
---Plain Style: Rm
---Italic Style: It
---Bold Style: Bd
---Bold Italic Style: BdIt
Baskerville It BT
---Plain Style: It
---Italic Style: False It
---Bold Style: BdIt
---Bold Italic Style: False BdIt
Baskerville Bd BT
---Plain Style: Bd
---Italic Style: BdIt
---Bold Style: False Bd
---Bold Italic Style: False BdIt
Baskerville BdIt BT
---Plain Style: BdIt
---Italic Style: False BdIt
---Bold Style: False BdIt
---Bold Italic Style: False BdIt
If you want to use the style menu or a style command, first select the plain font from the font menu. Or simply select the specific font (for example, Baskerville BdIt BT) from the font menu—then you don’t need to select a style.
CHARACTER SUBSTITUTION IN POSTSCRIPT OUTPUT
The Standard Character Set Key Cap Chart in the User Guide shows 188 characters that are accessible on the Macintosh screen and in documents printed to a PostScript (or QuickDraw™) printer.
In documents printed to PostScript printers, these 15 characters don’t match the design of the Bitstream font you used:
1 ≠
2 ∞
3 ≤
4 ≥
5 ∂
6 ∑
7 ∏
8 π
9 ∫
10 Ω
11 √
12 ≈
13 Δ
14 ◊
15 (Apple logo)
Your application accesses these characters from the Adobe Symbol font resident in the printer, instead of from the Bitstream font you used. A mismatch between the Macintosh character set and the PostScript character set causes this to happen. It is not a problem with the Bitstream fonts.
Note: These characters do not print at all if you are using Adobe Illustrator.®
USING BITSTREAM TYPE 1 FONTS WITH ADOBE TYPE MANAGER
All the Type 1 printer fonts included on this diskette work with version 2.0 or later of Adobe Type Manager (ATM). Contact Adobe if you need an upgrade.
To avoid character clipping in certain applications, select ATM’s Preserve Character Shapes option. To do this, select Control Panel from the Apple menu. Select ATM, select Character Shapes, and click OK. Select Restart from the Special menu to restart the Macintosh. For more information about Preserve Character Shapes, see the Adobe Type Manager User Guide.
You can print Bitstream Type 1 printer fonts on QuickDraw printers, such as the ImageWriter,® if you use ATM 2.0 or later. However, kerning support in QuickDraw is inconsistent among applications. See your application’s user guide for more information.
.AFM FILES
The Bitstream typefaces in this offering do not come with .AFM (Adobe font metric) files, which are ASCII files with character metric information for PostScript Type 1 typefaces. Most applications don't use .AFM files. If you need .AFM files, contact Bitstream.
